First Riders event - August 24, 2026
The 18th annual First Riders event will take place on Monday, August 24, at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. This free back-to-school event features guided bus tours and hands-on activities that help students and families feel prepared for riding the bus before the school year begins.
Invitations will be mailed to all early education and Kindergarten students who will receive yellow bus service for the 2026–2027 school year. Any student who is new to riding the school bus is welcome to attend. The event is also open to Grade 7 students who will be riding Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) buses for the first time.
The event is co-hosted with Conseil scolaire Centre-Nord, ETS and bus contractors from across the Edmonton area.
Sample messaging for school websites
Schools are encouraged to share information about First Riders on their website, as families will likely be visiting school websites for supply lists and other back-to-school information. Sample website text is available and can be posted before the end of the school year.
We’ll also share event reminders throughout August on Instagram and Facebook. If your school’s social media accounts are monitored over the summer, feel free to share these messages.

BUS SERVICE
As always, the yellow bus service only supports elementary students attending their primary designated school. This means, as of September 2014, grandfathered students who choose to continue at their current school, but do not live in the primary attendance area, will not be eligible for yellow bus service. This is unchanged from how we provide bus service to students across the District.
Service for Elementary Students
• Regular program service
As always, the yellow bus service is provided only to elementary students at their designated school.
• Alternative program service
Yellow bus service may also be available for elementary students who choose to attend a school offering an alternative program. Contact a school offering the program for eligibility information.
Service for Junior High StudentsThe
The Edmonton Transit System (ETS) is the preferred mode of transportation for junior high students to get to school.
Ride times
Minimizing ride times for students is our highest priority. We’ll work to make sure yellow bus service is as efficient as possible and meets the District’s ride time standards. We’ll also continue our ongoing work with the City of Edmonton to discuss how to best provide efficient ETS service for district students.
Bus passes
Students who receive bus service must buy a bus pass. Yellow bus and subsidized ETS passes can be purchased at your child’s school each month.
Applying for yellow bus service
Whether your child is new to yellow bus service or a current rider, you need to apply for yellow bus service each school year. Applications can be submitted throughout the school year. To learn about busing, see Get to School. Please contact the school to see if transportation is available to your address.
Yellow busing eligibility for the next school year
- Current bus students can apply via SchoolZone
- New applicants can find the application by visiting epsb.ca
If your child has been approved for yellow bus service, you’ll be notified in mid-August with the route number, stop locations, pick-up and drop-off times, and bus company contact information.
